10A: Freak Factor

Here's a link to the article, http://changethis.com/

This reading basically states that your weaknesses are not necessarily a bad thing. In fact they can also be your greatest strengths, like a double edged sword. In the section "What's my problem," Rendall talks about finding your weakness and capitalize on it. Your weakness makes you different and unique, you shouldn't waste your time trying to fix them. They are important clues to your strengths. A messy desk is something that is usually frowned upon. In actuality a messy desk usually means that a person is more creative. I agree with this section because I feel that too many people in the world are trying to fix themselves, find themselves, or whatever, when the answer has been within them the whole time. The next section I would like to talk about is titled, "Flawless: There's Nothing Wrong With You." People always say that addiction is a bad personality trait because of drugs and what not. Of course this is a problem, but addiction can also be a very good personality trait to have. You just need to apply it in the right direction. Rendall also talks about dyslexia in this section. Dyslexia is labeled as a disability in our society because people with this "disability" get letters and words mixed up, which leads to major problems with reading and writing. But, a recent study showed that 35% of small business owners have dyslexia. Also, another study found that people with dyslexia are far more likely to become millionaires. This just goes to show your weakness can also be your strength. The last section of the article I would like to talk about is titled, "Forget it: Don't Try To Fix Your Weaknesses." Trying to fix your weakness actually puts you at a disadvantage. It's time consuming and hold you back from working on other areas that you excel in. It can also be painful to people, we don't like working on our weaknesses. I think this again is another valid argument. In my creative life if I was to spend all of my time trying to organize things, I would not be able to create as much as I wanted to. I think my weaknesses are being disorganized, shy, and indecisive. But, in turn being disorganized can be seen as a strength of being creative. Being shy can be seen as a strength of reflective and being indecisive can be seen as a strength of patience. I believe you just need to capitalize on your strengths and live with your weaknesses, which can amplify your strengths.

7: Joke Video Review

Joke 1

Joke 2

In the first joke we utilized the concept of rhythm. There is a part in the movie when the main character farts three separate time and in between each far he is doing some sort of activity. This gives this makes the audience pay more attention to the movie because it is easy to follow. In the second video we used the concept of lines. We used straight lines throughout the movie, which contrast with the curvilinear shape of the beans. We did this to show the contrast that the beans had on his body. For example, throughout the whole movie main character is wearing a stripped shit. Also, in the dinner scene we used the moldings on the wall which point directly to the main characters face, to focus the audience on the main character. In both movies we used semantic sounds to represent thing that were going on in the video. For instance, the farting sounds and other sound effect throughout the video with the use of dubbing. In the second video we used analogous sounds to give a symbolic meaning. When the main character was first eating the beans, we used a song to foreshadow a horrible outcome, which would be the farting. Throughout the rest of the movie whenever the main character was about to have a farting episode, the song would play again. This also could be seen as a use of a leit motif. In the first movie we also used reduced sounds. This can be seen when the main character is in his girlfriends room. When she leaves the room he begins the fart, and after his fart he begins to spray fa-breeze to cover up the stench. The audience sees him spraying, but the sound is something else that they would not expect. We say the word, "spray" instead of using the actual sound.

5A: Reimaging Visual Framing

Sally Mann

The space in the original photo creates deep space. In the foreground your eye catches the shore line, which continues into the deep space that it creates. The shore line takes you to the drift wood in the middle ground of the photo. The shore line then goes further into deep space to the trees in the background. The shore line, drift wood, and the trees in the background create three different types of perceived lines. The trees in the background create vertical lines, which is in contrast to the drift wood that creates a horizontal line in the picture. The shore line also creates a line that goes into the photo, which creates the illusion of depth. The drift wood and the one stand out tree in the background create a triangular shape, which creates affinity within the photo. The space of the second photo differs from the first because it creates flat space. This is because you can only see the drift wood and the shore line. There is really no sense of a foreground, middle ground, and background. I chose to crop the first photo the way I did because I liked the tension and release that the drift wood creates against the shore line. Your eyes follow the shore line, which is the visual movement of the photo. Then, you notice the strange looking drift wood. This creates so much tension because the shore line is smooth and flowing and then the drift wood looks rough and ridged. It is placed in such as way where it is practically perpendicular to the shore line. Also, the drift wood disrupts the visual rhythm of the photo. Then release is created when you move past the drift wood to the shore line. I believe that the Sally Mann framed the photo the way she did because of the visual movement, tension, and depth of space that this photo creates. This photo does so many things in such a simple looking picture, that I believe can easily be taken for granted.

4A: Brainwashed

Check out "Brainwashed" on http://changethis.com/

In Gordin's article he talks about acknowledging the lizard. He's talking about the voice inside you that's always gives your the "what if" feeling, what if I fail. He's telling you that you need to acknowledge this feeling and you should not be at its will. You need to do what you want to do without worrying about being laughed at. Successful artistic people put their work out there without worrying about this and in turn can learn from their mistakes. He also talks about a level called ship. You need to be the indispensable person and  the one that makes things happen. If you do this then work will come to you and you will not have to look for it. I think that is one of the ultimate goals to have as a creative person. Become know for your work so people will come to you and you don't have to go looking for them.

3A: Cover

Original Song:

Cover Song:

The song “Hey ya,” created by a band called Outcast and was redone by Obadiah Parker.  Both the cover and the original song have the same ordered organization and chord structure. They also have the same melody and lyrics. The rhythm is also the same being that both versions are rhythmic and on time from one chord to another, nothing chaotic and out of the ordinary. Other than that both versions of the song are entirely different. In the cover song Obadiah Parker changes the pitch of his voice more so than the original song, whereas in the original song the singer pretty much keep his voice the same throughout the whole song. This provides the listener with more tension and release while listening to the song because you can hear him building up right before he is going to belt out. The original song has a faster speed, which makes it more of a fun loving pop song. Whereas the cover is played at a slower speed and has a more laid back/relaxed feel to it. The instrumentation of both versions of the song are drastically different. The original song is played by a whole band, a drummer, bassist, guitarist, and a singer. The cover song only has a guitarist, who is also the singer. This provides the original song with a more layered feel. The intensity of the original song is loud, which gives it the pop/dance feel. In contrast, the cover song has a softer intensity, which gives it the laid back/relaxed feel. This can also be said for the timbre of both songs. The original song is noisy, whereas the cover song is tonal because of the frequent and drastic in pitch of the guitar or vocals in the song.I personally prefer the cover song to the original. I like the instrumentation better and well as the overall feel of the song.

1B: Ways To Get Ideas

Heres a link so you can read Ditkoff's, "14 Ways to get Breakthrough Ideals."

This article gives it readers ways to go about coming up with new ideas. The article talks about how you can reinvent things that inspire you. So many ideas out there are just a combination of multiple ideas to create new ones. Challenge old patterns and try to make them your own. You should follow what inspires you because it will help you stay motivated in what you are doing. You also need to surround yourself with your idea so you are always thinking of ways to improve it. It goes on to talk about how you need to be able to not only tolerate your failures, but capitalize on them so you can learn from you mistakes, which will ultimately improve your final results. You need to also listen to yourself because sometimes your subconscious will prove to be of use. Sometimes you need to take a break and work on something else so your mind can take a rest and then come back to the situation with a fresh train of thought. You should surround yourself with a diverse crowd to allow yourself to take in all insights, which you can apply to your idea to make it that more original.

I think the "Make New Connections" section is a very good suggestion, especially for music artists in this day and age. There a new genre of music emerging called "Mashup." These types of artists take sample tracks from other musicians. They loop these track along with others to create there own unique mixture of music.

"Tolerate Ambiguity" is also another section that I believe to be important especially in the media industry. Because this industry doesn't really have a linear path that you can follow from the beginning you need to be flexible and tolerate your failures. This will allow you to grow and figure out what type of career choice is best for you. For example, man professions in the music and video industry have many failure before they have a breakthrough. From their failures you are able to see what they did wrong and how the audience reacted to it. This ultimately gives them the ability to keep makes better material as time goes on.

"Notice and Challenge Existing Patterns and Trends" is also another very important section. In you culture there are many trends that go in and out of style. As an artist you need to be knowledgeable about the changing of trends and be ahead of the curve. Being ahead of the trend curve will give you the ability to capitalize on the situation and introduce your type of media at the appropriate time for the most success.

"Notice and Challenge Existing Patterns and Trends"

 9. What trends in the marketplace most intrigues you? In what ways might these trends shift in the coming years-and how might your most inspired be in sync with this imagination?

The trends in the music industry intrigues me the most. Just take a look at hip-hop. The music genre of hip-hop emerged in the late 80s and early 90s. It has been transforming since then through the work various artists. In the late 90s, many of the hip-hop artists along with up and coming artists started making rap, which is similar to hip-hop, but the lyrics and instrumentation give off a darker/angrier feel. These new rap artists were considered "gangstas,""badass," and  "hard." Today, there is no sign of hip-hop or even rap for that matter. It has been transformed into a club/r&b/rap style of music. Many of the hip-hop/rap artists, including 50 cent and Eminem have jumped on this band wagon. These are rappers that have talked about shooting and killing people in the lyrics from their previous work. They try to give off the image of being "hard" and "gangsta," yet now they are making this happy go lucky club music for people to go dance to.
Children that aren't even in high school yet are getting their hands on this music through one web portal or another, something that there parents might not even know how to do. Now little Amber can play her favorite R. Kelly song "Trapped In The Closet" in her mommy's car after she gets picked up from 5th grade. Then she can get front seat tickets to go see him live in concert, yet only to get pissed on by her beloved R.K. Now that's pure irony, which I believe is classified under one of our six binary terms, objective. You can now say confidently with your newly gained knowledge that little Amber's excitement to see R. Kelly in concert was abruptly short circuited through objective irony.
I kinda went off topic there, but personally I find this hilarious and disappointing, but more hilarious. Too many artists are going too mainstream. They're not creating something new for themselves, but rather they are tapping into the next new jackpot of sound. The G-Unit is now the G-Babies. I'm not saying I don't like all of this new wave club music, but what mean to say is that I wish hip-hop/rap was not forgotten about and in some ways replaced.

1A: Who influences me as a creative person?

Here are some things that I do which could categorize me as a creative person. I enjoy playing music instruments such as the guitar and drums. I like to make short videos. I don't like algebra.

These next two guys I am going to introduce are two of the most inspiring people to me.

Tim Heidecker
Eric Wareheim

I originally wanted to study game design and animation until the day I was introduced to these two gents. From then on I have wanted to study video production. They have their own unique sense of humor which is portrayed through their work and I can't get enough of it. It's funny though because before I even knew about them, me and a couple of my friends were already making videos with the same type of humor if you will. So when I saw these guys I was immediately in love. It also made me think that if these two could be successful doing this type of stuff, so could I.

Here is one of my favorite short films they created:

In this video Tim and Eric use a lot of subtext through the use of irony to provide comedy through the short film. Eric plays a 26 year old that lives with his stepfather, played by Tim. Throughout the film Tim and Eric are getting ready to perform for the cover shoot of a magazine named, "Father and Son." This magazine is supposed to be for little children and their fathers, so the fact that Eric is 26 and trying to get on the cover provides humor through the show. There is also use of tension and release. For example, Tim gets a phone call from his friend saying that one of Tim's ex girlfriends had a kid which was proven to be his. Tim brings his new son home and Eric becomes jealous of him. Because of this, Eric bring the new son of the family to a cliff where they can look at gliders. When they get Eric's character becomes enraged with hate toward the new son and he throws him off the cliff.

This is a montage clip from their podcast called Tim and Eric Nite Live:
The Best of Tim and Eric Nite Live from Tim and Eric on Vimeo.

Tim and Eric Nite Live is a lampoon of the tradition talk show. In the beginning of the show they announce a special guest that will appear on the show, such as Tom Cruise. They won't have the actual guess on the show, they will have someone that looks and talks like him instead. This provides humor through misdirection. They also provide contrast through the theme of each show. For example, they have a Christmas special, a valentines special, and an anniversary special. This makes the show more entertaining because it provides a fresh environment for the audience in each episode. This is probably my favorite of their works because a lot of it is impromptu and I feel like they are the funniest when doing so.

This next video is a clip from their T.V. showed titled, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!:

In this clip Tim and Eric fog and a crappy camera angle to provide humor. They also use text to provide humor as well just by saying "success." Their clothing along with their facial expression is an example of the type of humor they have. They like to use crappy looking 90's clothing in many of their skits. In this clip you can see this in the last scene when Tim is wearing a pair of woman's pants from the 90's. Also in this clip as well as many others, Tim and Eric make the clip so stupid that it is funny. I don't know if that fits into any of the binary terms or not, or if there is even a word for it, but that's what they do and I love it.
